Kandy, Sri Lanka: The Cultural Heart of the Island

Kandy, Sri Lanka: The Cultural Heart of the Island

Nestled in a valley surrounded by majestic hills and a serene lake, Kandy is often referred to as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. As the last stronghold of the Sri Lankan Kings against colonial powers, the city fiercely preserved its customs, arts, and religion, making it a living museum of ancient Sinhalese traditions today.

A City Around a Lake

At the center of the city lies the Bogambara Lake (Kandy Lake), an artificial body of water created in 1807 by Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last ruler of the kingdom of Kandy. A leisurely stroll around this iconic lake at sunset, as the sky reflects on the calm waters and the sounds of evening temple drums echo across the valley, is a quintessential Kandy experience.

The Rhythms of Kandyan Art

Kandy is synonymous with traditional Sri Lankan arts. The region is famous for the dynamic Kandyan Dance, originally performed by shamans to appease the gods and cure illnesses. Today, visitors can witness these spectacular cultural shows, featuring acrobatic leaps, rhythmic drum beats, and daring fire-walking performances.

Beyond dance, the surrounding villages are hubs for distinct artisan crafts. From intricate brass and copper work in Kalapura to traditional wood carving and handloom weaving, the legacy of royal artisans continues to thrive.

Royal Botanical Brilliance

Just a few kilometers from the city center lies the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. Once a pleasure garden for a Kandyan queen, it was expanded by the British and now spans 147 acres, housing over 4,000 species of plants, including an incredible orchid house and a towering avenue of royal palms.

A visit to Kandy is a deep dive into the proud heritage, cool highland climates, and vibrant rhythms that define the soul of Sri Lanka.
